| 7 May 2008 - Galileo's GIOVE-B satellite transmits signals: | ||
|
Jointly built by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union, the GIOVE-B satellite (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element) started transmitting the GPS-Galileo common civil signal MBOC (Multiplexed Binary Offset Carrier) after its successful launching from Kazakhstan 10 days before.
GIOVE-B is now orbiting at an altitude of 23 173 kms, making a complete journey around the earth every 14 hours and 3 minutes. The specific optimised waveform MBOC signal transmitted by GIOVE-B will provide higher positioning accuracy in all environments and will also improve the penetration for indoor navigation. This successful operation is as well ensuring the compatibility and the interoperability of GPS and Galileo systems.
