puce Logica activities in satellite navigation:

From advising institutional bodies on infrastructure procurement, through to development of end-user applications, Logica is active in the satellite navigation market place at all levels. Providers of flight dynamics and satellite and mission control systems to the European Space Agency (ESA) for more than 30 years, Logica has recently developed the €11M EGNOS Check Set. This is the most critical element of EGNOS which, by constantly validating the integrity of each member of the GPS/GLONASS constellation, will enable its use for safety-of-life applications. On the Galileo programme, Logica has assisted the EC and ESA with the definition of the PPP and management structure, as well as in market analysis and space-related technology. Furthermore, following on from roles in the definition phase covering aspects such as security and service provision, Logica intends to play a leading role in the deployment of the Galileo system, especially in the area of the ground segment.

On the application side, Logica has provided vehicle telematics and traffic management systems for customers throughout the world (including the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, the US and Australia), and covering all transport sectors (road, rail, air and sea). Examples include fleet management systems for taxis in London and for the public bus system in Bologna (Italy), and systems to support military air traffic control in the UK, shipping in Rotterdam, and the control of the unmanned metro trains in San Francisco. We are also a leading supplier of battle space communications systems to the UK MOD, which are making increasing demands on satellite navigation.

  puce Logica and Galileo Services:

With a broad offering of services in a wide range of market sectors, Logica views Galileo Services as a strategic enabling technology that will provide opportunities throughout the company in the years ahead. Existing offerings (e.g. vehicle telematics) will be enhanced by the improvements in availability and accuracy that Galileo will provide. But more importantly, a whole new range of applications will be possible to take advantage of these new services. In particular the guarantees of availability and integrity, for example, will make use of Galileo possible for safety-of-life applications, which opens up a whole new area of possibilities.
One of the largest areas of Logica business over the past 10 years has been in wireless telecommunications, with a broad product portfolio covering 2G, 2.5G and 3G systems. Around 80% of the worlds SMS traffic is managed by Logica systems. Integration of Galileo with wireless telecoms will enable users to to benefit from location-based services, which is also expected to be a major area of business growth.

Consequently, Logica is keen to see the potential for Galileo Services developed to the fullest possible extent. By being part of Galileo Services, Logica aims to participate in the process of increasing awareness and demand for Galileo, and to benefit from the opportunities that this will provide in the years to come.
